Facial balancing with filler: how we plan five areas as one face.
Not more filler. Filler where the face actually needs it.
Facial balancing is dermal filler planned around the whole face instead of one area at a time. At the MODE aesthetics practice in North Scottsdale we assess the temples, midface, lips, jawline, and chin together, then support only the areas that have lost structure, so the face reads as rested rather than treated.
In a carousel from April, Torey Varner, RN, our nurse injector and injector trainer, shared seven before and after pairs of one patient, photographed from the front, in profile, and at an angle. The areas she listed: the left temple, the midface and cheeks, the lips, the jawline, and the chin. No single area looks dramatically different. The face as a whole looks a little more supported from every angle. That is the point.
What is facial balancing?
“The goal is to harmonize by subtle enhancements. No looking “overdone”.”

Rather than treating a line because it is the thing you noticed in the mirror, a balancing plan starts with a full face assessment: which areas have lost support, which features carry more visual weight than they used to, and how each area sits next to its neighbors. Filler goes where structure is missing, not simply where attention lands.
The fillers we use for this work are hyaluronic acid gels from the Juvederm and Restylane families. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body, which makes these fillers well tolerated, reversible, and adjustable in small increments. Within each family, individual products are calibrated for different areas. Choosing between them is a product fit decision, not a brand preference.
Why plan the temples, cheeks, lips, jawline, and chin together?
Because the face is read as a whole. A lip treated in isolation can look larger without looking better, while the same lip inside a balanced plan simply looks like yours. Support through the temples and midface changes how the upper and lower face relate, which is why Marisa Dulin, MSN, FNP-C, describes placing support in the mid face before we treat the folds. Chin and jawline placement changes how the profile carries light and shadow. Treating five areas lightly often looks quieter than treating one area hard.
“Filler should support, balance and look refreshed when done appropriately.”

Our approach on the dermal filler service page says it plainly: the goal is anatomical proportion. A cheek that looks like your cheek, a lip that reads as yours. We build gradually across visits when needed, and we would rather under dose than over correct.
How many syringes does facial balancing take?
The honest answer is a range. Lips typically take half a syringe to one syringe. Cheeks take one to two syringes per side. A full face rebalance might use three to six syringes, and we usually spread them across multiple visits rather than placing everything at once. In her post, Torey asked followers to guess how many syringes this patient needed, precisely because the number is smaller than most people expect when the placement is strategic.
The count for your face is mapped at a consultation, written into a plan with a quote, and the quote is honored. Balancing also does not have to mean many areas. Sometimes the right plan is one small area done well, the way we approach earlobe filler.
Will it look overdone?
This is the fear behind most filler hesitation, and it is a reasonable one. Restraint first means we stop before fullness, not at it. Volume is visible immediately and settles fully at about two weeks, and results typically last 6 to 18 months depending on the product and the area, so the plan can evolve as your face does.
Hyaluronic acid filler is also reversible. If a result ever needs to be adjusted, hyaluronidase dissolves it, and we keep it on hand; you can read how that works on our filler correction page. And about six weeks after treatment, once swelling has fully resolved, you come back for a complimentary follow up with the same injector to decide together whether any refinement is needed.
Who plans facial balancing at MODE in Scottsdale?
Filler at MODE Aesthetics and Wellness is planned and placed only by Marisa Dulin, MSN, FNP-C, or Torey Varner, RN, who also trains other licensed injectors. An injectable consultation is complimentary and takes 45 to 60 minutes. We are on E Pinnacle Peak Rd in North Scottsdale, serving Scottsdale and the neighborhoods around us, from DC Ranch and Silverleaf to Grayhawk and Troon.
A five area filler plan sounds like a way to sell me more syringes. If I come to MODE for facial balancing, how do I know I am not being oversold?
That instinct is healthy. Injectable consultations at MODE are complimentary, take 45 to 60 minutes, and end with a written plan and quote we honor, with no pressure to treat the same day. A balancing plan often spreads three to six syringes across multiple visits, and if one area is all your face needs, one area is what we plan.
