What it is

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to disable hair follicles by targeting the melanin in the hair shaft. It’s the most effective long-term hair reduction method available — typically 80-95% permanent reduction after a complete series.

At MODE we offer laser hair removal across the most-requested facial and body areas. Pricing is per-area, and we recommend a starting series of 6-8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, followed by annual maintenance.

  • MechanismLight energy targets melanin in hair follicle; follicle is disabled
  • Best forDarker hair on any skin tone (technology has advanced significantly)
  • Series length6-8 sessions typical for primary reduction
  • MaintenanceAnnual touch-up sessions as hormones cycle
  • Pairs withWaxing between sessions is fine; shaving preferred

The protocol

A deliberate sequence — not a one-time visit.

01

Consult

Hair color, skin type, and medical history reviewed. Hormonal conditions (PCOS, thyroid) affect expected results — we’ll discuss realistic outcomes.

02

Pre-treatment

Shave the area 24-48 hours before treatment — laser needs hair below the surface, not on top. Avoid waxing, plucking, and sun exposure for 2 weeks prior.

03

Treatment

15-45 minutes depending on area. Cooling sapphire tip delivers pulsed light. Sensation: warm rubber-band snap. Topical numbing available.

04

Recovery

Mild redness 1-24 hours. Treated hairs “shed” over 7-14 days — they appear to regrow but are actually being pushed out. Normal activity same day.

05

Series

Sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Hair is treatable only in active growth phase (anagen) — the spacing ensures we catch multiple hair cycles.

Questions

What patients often ask.

How many sessions until I see results?+
You’ll see reduction after the first 2-3 sessions. Full primary reduction requires 6-8 sessions. Hormonal hair patterns may need 8-10+. Individual response varies with hair color, density, and hormones.
Is it permanent?+
Technically “permanent reduction” — typically 80-95% gone after a full series. New hairs can emerge later (hormonal shifts, pregnancy). Annual maintenance touch-ups keep the reduction consistent.
Does it work on light or gray hair?+
Limited. Laser targets melanin, so blonde, red, white, and gray hairs don’t respond well. For those hairs, electrolysis is the alternative (not offered at MODE — refer to a specialist).
Is it safe for darker skin?+
Modern lasers (especially Nd:YAG wavelengths) are safe across all skin types. Earlier laser generations had risks for Fitzpatrick V-VI; current technology doesn’t. We’ll confirm appropriate settings.
Does it hurt?+
Described as a rubber-band snap — warm and brief. Sensitive areas like bikini can sting more. Topical numbing cream is available for particularly sensitive patients.
Can I wax between sessions?+
No — waxing removes the hair root that the laser needs to target. Between sessions, shave only. Tweezing and threading also off-limits.
Who performs LHR at MODE?+
Heather Cyr, LME, CLT and Sara Espinoza, LME, CLT — both certified laser technicians.
