What it is

Dermaplane is manual exfoliation using a sterile surgical blade, held at a precise angle, to remove dead skin cells and vellus (“peach fuzz”) hair from the face. The result: immediately brighter, smoother skin, and significantly improved product absorption and makeup application.

At $125 for an hour, dermaplane is one of our most relaxing skin-quality treatments. Monthly is the sweet spot — consistent enough to keep the surface refined without over-exfoliating.

  • MechanismSterile surgical blade manually exfoliates dead cells + vellus hair
  • Best forSurface dullness, makeup prep, product absorption, general maintenance
  • Does NOTCause hair to grow back thicker — vellus fuzz grows back same texture (myth debunked)
  • Pairs withHydrafacial (combo at $375), chemical peel, custom facial
  • CadenceMonthly; pre-event prep 3-7 days out

At MODE, in-clinic work is amplified by the ZO Skin Health regimen you follow between visits — calibrated at consult, tuned as your skin changes.

The protocol

A deliberate sequence — not a one-time visit.

01

Cleanse

Skin thoroughly cleansed and dried to remove oil and debris. The blade needs dry, taut skin to work properly.

02

Dermaplane passes

Your aesthetician holds the blade at a controlled angle and makes gentle passes across the face. Completely painless — feels like a very light, steady scrape.

03

Serum application

With dead cells and vellus hair removed, serums penetrate significantly more effectively. A brightening or hydrating serum is applied post-dermaplane.

04

SPF

Fresh-exposed skin is briefly photo-sensitive. SPF applied before you leave; continued sun care recommended.

Questions

What patients often ask.

Will my peach fuzz grow back thicker?+
No — this is a myth. Vellus hair and terminal hair are biologically different. Shaving terminal hair (on legs, underarms) doesn’t thicken it either; the perceived thickness is a blunt cut edge vs. a natural taper. Vellus regrows at the same texture. Decades of dermaplaning in medical aesthetics has not produced any meaningful change in facial hair thickness or pattern.
Is it safe?+
Yes, when performed by a trained professional with a proper sterile single-use blade. Aestheticians and cosmetologists in Arizona are licensed and trained for this service. At-home dermaplaning tools exist but are lower-quality; we recommend in-clinic.
How often?+
Monthly is ideal.
Can I dermaplane if I have active acne?+
Not over active breakouts — the blade spreads bacteria across the face. We skip the acne zone if needed or reschedule until the flare settles. Dermaplane is fine for closed comedones and surface congestion.
Does it make my makeup look better?+
Yes — dramatically. Foundation sits flat instead of catching on vellus hair. Many patients book dermaplane specifically for event prep (3-7 days before a wedding, photography, etc.).
Dermaplane + Hydrafacial combo?+
Yes — $375 for both ($375 vs. $250 Hydrafacial + $125 Dermaplane = $375 combo, same price, streamlined into one session). Best-of-both for comprehensive surface reset.
Who performs dermaplane?+
Heather Cyr, LME, CLT and Sara Espinoza, LME, CLT.
