What it is

Chemical peels use medical-grade acids to resurface the outer layers of skin — accelerating natural cell turnover and addressing pigmentation, texture, acne, and sun damage. At MODE we exclusively use the ZO Skin Health peel line, developed by Dr. Zein Obagi.

Three peel depths available: the ZO 3-Step (medium-depth, the signature; $350), ZO Stimulator (light, “lunchtime”; $100), and Clear Skin (salicylic-forward for acne; $100). Your esthetician recommends based on your skin’s baseline, concerns, and downtime tolerance.

  • Peel lineZO Skin Health exclusively
  • ZO 3-Step Peel$350 — retinol + acids, medium depth, minimal-moderate downtime
  • ZO Stimulator Peel$100 — light brightening, no downtime
  • Clear Skin Peel$100 — salicylic-forward, targets acne and congestion
  • Pairs withBBL laser (synergistic for pigmentation), microneedling, Hydrafacial maintenance

At MODE, in-clinic work is amplified by the ZO Skin Health regimen you follow between visits — calibrated at consult, tuned as your skin changes.

The protocol

A deliberate sequence — not a one-time visit.

01

Skin assessment

We evaluate skin thickness, current regimen, sun exposure history, and pigmentation risk. This determines which peel depth fits and whether pre-conditioning is needed.

02

Pre-conditioning (for ZO 3-Step)

Patients new to medical-grade peels may benefit from 2-4 weeks of ZO skincare prep to strengthen the skin barrier and improve peel outcome.

03

Treatment

Peel applied in the appropriate layered sequence. Varying sensation depending on peel — Stimulator is light warmth; 3-Step has more active tingling.

04

Recovery

Stimulator/Clear Skin: zero-minimal downtime, possible mild flaking for 1-3 days. 3-Step: 3-7 days of visible peeling; mandatory sun avoidance.

05

Series

Medium peels benefit from a 3-peel series every 4-6 weeks. Stimulator and Clear Skin can be monthly or event-prep as-needed.

Questions

What patients often ask.

Which peel is right for me?+
Depends on your goal and downtime. Quick glow + no downtime: ZO Stimulator. Active acne: Clear Skin. Serious pigmentation/texture correction: ZO 3-Step (medium depth, real peeling). Your esthetician recommends during consult.
What’s the downtime on the ZO 3-Step?+
Variable — typically 3-7 days of visible peeling and some redness. You can go out with makeup, but your skin will be visibly shedding. Plan around events; aim 2 weeks before anything important.
Can I peel if I have darker skin?+
Yes, carefully. Peels done on darker skin require skin-barrier prep and appropriate depth selection to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. ZO is well-formulated for this; we always pre-condition darker skin patients before medium peels.
How often can I get peels?+
Stimulator and Clear Skin: monthly or event-prep. ZO 3-Step: every 4-6 weeks for an initial series of 2-3, then every 6-12 months for maintenance.
Do peels help acne?+
Yes, particularly Clear Skin (salicylic-forward) and ZO 3-Step (retinol + resurfacing). Peels clear pore congestion, reduce pigmentation from old breakouts, and accelerate skin cell turnover. Part of a broader acne-management plan.
Who performs peels at MODE?+
Heather Cyr, LME, CLT and Sara Espinoza, LME, CLT.
