Can a first lip filler look natural? Hydrating the lips and softening chin shadows to balance the profile.

Can a first lip filler look natural? At MODE Aesthetics and Wellness in North Scottsdale it can, when it is planned for hydration and proportion rather than size: Marisa Dulin, MSN, FNP-C, or Torey Varner, RN, places hyaluronic acid dermal filler in the lips and, where the profile asks for it, the pre-jowl area, after a complimentary 45 to 60 minute consultation with a written plan and quote.

Can a first lip filler look natural? At MODE, a medspa in North Scottsdale, the answer is yes, and the way we get there is by planning the lips for hydration and proportion rather than size, and by looking at the whole profile before the first syringe is opened. The lips, the chin, and the line of the jaw are read together, so a small amount of support in the pre-jowl area can do as much for a lip result as the lip filler itself.

In April, Marisa Dulin, MSN, FNP-C, our co-owner, nurse practitioner, and lead injector, shared the before and after above: one patient, new to filler, treated in the lips and the pre-jowl area in a single plan. Her caption is quoted where the words are hers. The rest traces to our dermal filler, consultation, and pre and post care pages, and to the companion clinical reference built for this article.

“This patient was new to filler, so we kept things soft, subtle, and supportive. We started by hydrating the lips while keeping her natural shape, then treated the pre-jowl area (often called chin shadows) to create a smoother, more balanced profile.”

What does the before and after show?

The hero image is a three quarter view of the same patient before treatment on the left and after it on the right, labelled with the practice’s own words, profile balancing. On the after side the lips read fuller and smoother while their outline is unchanged, and the small dip in front of the jowl, the chin shadow, sits softer, so the line from the chin along the jaw reads as one continuous line. Nothing on the right looks placed, which is the point of the plan rather than an accident of the lighting. Individual results vary, and what you see here is one patient on one day.

What does hydrating the lips mean, and why not add volume?

The fillers we use at MODE are hyaluronic acid gels from the Juvederm and Restylane families. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body, and in the lips a small amount of the gel does two things at once: it hydrates the tissue and it adds a little structural volume. When a first lip plan is built around the first of those rather than the second, the lip keeps its own shape. It reads as your lip on a good day, not as a different lip.

That is why the amounts are small. For the lips we typically plan half to one syringe, inside a dermal filler plan that is restraint first across the whole face: we would rather stop before fullness than at it, and we build gradually across visits when more is wanted, because filler can always be added at a follow up while a result that is too heavy has to be dissolved or waited out. It is the same thinking Marisa describes in why a touch in the lips keeps the face in balance when the mid face is being treated: proportion with the rest of the face, not size.

What are chin shadows, and why treat the pre-jowl area with the lips?

Chin shadows is the name patients give to the pre-jowl area, the short stretch of the lower face between the chin and the jowl. As the lower face loses firmness and structural support, a small dip forms there, and because light falls into it the area reads as a shadow on either side of the chin even when nothing else has changed. A small amount of hyaluronic acid filler placed in that dip gives the tissue something to rest on, so the line of the jaw reads as continuous again. Neither the chin nor the pre-jowl placement is meant to make the lower face larger, and in a good result nobody can point to where the filler is.

Treating the pre-jowl area in the same plan as the lips is a profile decision. In a three quarter or side view the eye reads the lips, the chin, and the jawline as one line, which is why we look at the lower face before we plan the lips rather than treating the lips on their own. Support in front of the jowl lets the lips sit in balance with the chin, which is why the practice labels this kind of plan profile balancing. Where the pre-jowl area sits in a plan for the jawline itself has its own note in the Journal: why we support the chin and pre-jowl rather than add volume.

Will a first lip filler look obvious?

“Small changes can make such a difference when they’re placed thoughtfully. My goal is always to enhance what’s already there, never to overdo it.”

Marisa Dulin, MSN, FNP-C, on Instagram, April 2026

Not when the plan starts from your own lip shape and stops before fullness. The way we avoid an overfilled lip is to treat for hydration first, see the settled result together, and add only if you want more. The before and after results in our results gallery include lip and chin cases planned the same way. And because these fillers are hyaluronic acid, the plan is reversible: if a result ever needs adjusting, hyaluronidase dissolves it, and filler correction at MODE is $200, welcomed without judgment whether the filler was placed with us or elsewhere.

What happens at a first lip filler appointment in Scottsdale?

It starts with a conversation, not a syringe. The injectables consultation at MODE is complimentary, takes 45 to 60 minutes, and is a full face assessment with the injector herself: your goals, what the lips and the lower face are doing, which product fits, and how many syringes across which areas. It ends with a written plan and quote that we honor, with no pressure to treat the same visit. If you are new to filler, bring every question; answering them is what the hour is for.

The treatment itself takes 30 to 60 minutes. We use topical numbing, most hyaluronic acid fillers contain lidocaine, and the product is placed with a fine needle or a cannula. Torey Varner, RN, walks through what a first filler appointment involves from arrival to the follow up, with a first time patient treated in the cheeks; the lips follow the same visit shape.

What should a first time lip filler patient expect while it settles?

Lips swell. That is normal, and it is not your result. Swelling and any bruising typically peak at 24 to 48 hours and then begin to resolve, slight asymmetry in the first week is common as swelling settles unevenly, and lip filler takes two to three weeks to fully settle. For the first 24 hours you avoid heat, pressure, exertion, alcohol, intense workouts, saunas, and facials, and sleep with your head slightly elevated. Firm pressure or massage on the lips is avoided unless your injector tells you otherwise, and dental work is kept two weeks clear of filler on either side because of a bacterial seeding risk. All of this, with what is normal and when to call, is in our practice approved pre and post care guide for dermal filler, published before you ever book.

Two things are worth knowing before any lip filler, anywhere. Call us for severe or worsening pain, for blanching, mottling, or white, grey, or purple patches of skin near the injection area, or for any sudden change in vision. Those are the signs of a vascular occlusion, which the published reviews describe as blanching, a dusky or mottled discoloration, or livedo type changes near the injection site and, rarely, vision changes, and which need prompt attention because delayed recognition can let tissue ischemia progress. Call (480) 203-2072 first; if we cannot be reached within minutes, call 911. About six weeks after treatment, once the swelling has fully resolved, you come back for a complimentary follow up with the same injector to decide together whether any refinement is wanted.

How long does lip filler last?

Less long than cheek or chin filler, and it depends on the product and on you. The lips move constantly and the tissue is thinner, so filler there metabolizes faster than deeper structural placement such as the pre-jowl area. How long your plan lasts is part of the consultation; the typical ranges we quote by area are on our dermal filler page, and most patients return at about twelve months for a review.

Who places lip filler at MODE in North Scottsdale?

Injectables at MODE Aesthetics and Wellness are placed only by Marisa Dulin, MSN, FNP-C, our co-owner, nurse practitioner, and lead injector, and Torey Varner, RN, our nurse injector, who also trains other licensed professionals in injection technique. The clinician who plans your lips at the consultation is the clinician who places the filler and the one who sees you at the follow up.

Our office is at 7420 E Pinnacle Peak Rd, Suite 120, on the Pinnacle Peak corridor in North Scottsdale. Patients asking about lip filler come to us from DC Ranch, Silverleaf, Grayhawk, Troon, and McDowell Mountain Ranch, from Paradise Valley and Cave Creek, and from across Scottsdale.

I am new to filler and have a lot of questions about my lips. At another medspa the injector seemed annoyed that a first timer was asking them. Who answers my questions at MODE, and is it the same person who injects?

Ask every one of them. At MODE the consultation is with the injector, Marisa Dulin, MSN, FNP-C, or Torey Varner, RN: it is complimentary, takes 45 to 60 minutes, and ends with a written plan and quote we honor, with no pressure to treat the same visit. The person who plans your lips is the person who places the filler, and your six week follow up is with her too.

Marisa Dulin’s bio covers her training and the injectables practice she leads at MODE.
